Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is a colorless, odorless gas renowned for its mild sedative properties, effectively calming patients during dental procedures.
Administered through a carefully fitted mask, nitrous oxide is blended with oxygen and delivered in a controlled manner to induce a sense of relaxation and euphoria. While some patients may experience mild tingling sensations or dizziness, these effects dissipate quickly after the appointment, allowing them to resume their daily activities, including driving home.
It’s important to note that nitrous oxide may not be suitable for everyone. Contraindications include specific medical conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or a history of substance abuse. Pregnant women should consult their obstetrician before considering nitrous oxide sedation, although it can be safely administered in certain cases.
